Just in case you are wondering, yes Cushings disease is fixable.
I just had a great validation for my long held, very strong opinion/experience that a large part of curing Cushings disease can be found in my sort of relationship work.
(If you don’t know anything about my work, then go have a look at the completely free gift set The 9 Keys to Happiness with Your Horse.)
Cortisol is a hormone that is released when humans and horses are under stress. The “switch” for that hormone can get stuck on in conditions of chronic stress, releasing Cortisol all the time. Testing for levels of ACTH hormone is used for diagnosing Cushings disease in people and ACTH hormone is the the trigger hormone that releases Cortisol.
Hmmm… there’s the link that I always knew was there.
Now if you have a Cushings horse, please don’t think that I am thinking that the stress they are under is your fault. It can be quite old stress and the cortisol switch got stuck on quite some time ago and it took a while before it showed in the kind of health problems that are visible to the naked eye. Trauma, like fear, is cumulative. Even small things can add on to each other, creating a big problem.
My approach to the horse human relationship, particularly the trauma releasing aspects that you can read about in the bonus lesson at the end of The 9 Keys to Happiness with Your Horse, makes it possible for the human side of the partnership to help the horse side of the partnership release that old trauma and heal – even heal things as big as Cushings.
So go get that gift and some great insights on helping your horse heal with some VERY simple techniques. You’ll find the link to the 9 Keys to Happiness with Your Horse right at the top of our Training Programs page here.
