He was a concreter – laying paths and driveways and foundations, worked hard all his life, on his knees for part of most days. He hadn’t worked for six months though and the doctor was talking about severing the nerve to get him out of the agony he’d been experiencing for so long. This was errr… over twenty five years ago? I wonder if they still do that nerve severing thing when they don’t know any other way?
I noticed this bloke particularly because he took forever to get out of the car and he was crabbing and shuffling down the driveway all bent over. “I hope you don’t mind that I think this is a crock of shit.” he said. Can you hear the dry humor in my voice? “Lucky you don’t have to believe in Bowen muscle therapy for it to work then.”
I remember this case so vividly because I was newly qualified in working on humans, though I’d been working on horses for a while. I was used to treating horses lined up a row. In the wait time for the last Bowen “move” to settle, I’d do the next move on the next horse in the line. (It’s a gentle vibrational technique, you have to wait between moves to allow its effectiveness. You’re either twiddling your thumbs while you wait or have a line up. 🙂 )
It makes me smile now to think of that day with my first big group of humans to work on. I had 2 massage tables set up and people on yoga mats lined up in a row on the grass and more people with their horses waiting over in the paddock. It was at a client’s place near Ballarat and a lovely warm summers day that made working on the lawn possible. I’m suddenly laughing here… I just had an image of you thinking of naked people lined up in a row. Ahhh… no… You can do Bowen on people quite easily in loose clothing. 🙂
Less than an hour later our concreting friend walked out wriggling his hips down the driveway, showing off doing the hula.

Sciatic pain often involves pain down the leg as well as in the lower back. I remember when I had it, not only was it agonizing, my leg would kind of give way underneath me suddenly. It was very disconcerting, I had to use a stick to make sure I didn’t fall over and I’m pretty sure that’s the time that I borrowed someone’s old lady walking frame for a while.
This case was an easy one. These days we have even more ways of getting at even the stickiest sciatic problem, because some of what we used to think of as the tough cases have much more than physical stuff as their root cause. Understanding how we experience our connection to others and being able to clear up old emotional crap makes clearing up those complicated cases a lot more simple these days. For your info… most of these techniques work to resolve sciatica and other back pain by distance, wherever you are in the world.
Today’s photo: No that’s not him! 🙂
