The answers to those three questions in the picture can bring you everything you ever wanted with a horse if you hold to them – if you make WHY you wanted a horse the foundation that you base your actions on. Why did you want a horse? What drew you to them? And how do you want to feel when you’re with them?
I had to really stop and allow this article to percolate this morning, to find the words for this, because this is so freaking important…
We’ve been taught all kinds of ways of making a horse do what we want them to do, but the question is – which of these things we’ve been taught are taking us AWAY from the glorious feelings that you dreamed of, that brought you into horses in the first place?
AND which things have we been been taught, that bring us CLOSER to those feelings and that dream?
Yeah that’s big hey?
Which things have we been taught that take us FURTHER AWAY from both the feelings and the dream? Spoiler alert – if you’re feeling tight or tense, struggling, worried, frustrated, stuck, stagnant or numb, if you have pent up feelings or you’re anxious, nervous or downright fearful – then something is taking you FURTHER AWAY from the feelings that drew you to horses and the dream that you wanted with them.
Hmmm I said it was big hey.
Here’s the opposite. Which things have we been taught that bring us CLOSER to those feelings and that dream that brought us into horses? Which things have we been taught, that feel really deep to the bones, good? Where the tension’s gone, the stress has gone – where we’re relaxed, confident, excited – even joyful about what we’re doing?
Whatever each person’s answers are about what they want from being with a horse – and they certainly won’t all be the same – when we base everything that we do on the answers to those questions like this, our horse journey becomes an easily happy one.
I wanted to slap the instructor who told me to “enjoy the journey Jenny”. How could I enjoy the journey when I was bogged down in the crap with this talented, difficult, incredibly resistant horse who could buck higher than my head? That horse was my Bobby, who opened me to this gentle and practical and effective work, who taught me how to listen to him and how to teach other people to listen to and get the best from their horses too.
Mannn I sooo wanted to be really good with horses that I spent over $50,000 and traveled I don’t know how many tens of thousands of kilometres listening to others who had more experience than me. But I didn’t pay attention to what made me feel good and so much of what I was being taught, made me feel crappy, frustrated and “less than”. I squashed down that crappiness, squashed down my fear and I got more and more tight and tense, with more and more pain from it. At my worst I was taking 2 panadeine forte before every ride so I could get out of the saddle afterwards. If you’re not familiar with the brand, they’re medium strong prescription pain killers.
I vividly remember the morning that I realized that the rock of dread that had been sitting in my solar plexus and the tension had disappeared. It turned out that all along the answer had been sitting in the paddock at home. All that dread and tension disappeared when the magnificent horse in the picture above, taught me how to listen to / feel him.
When you listen to / feel your horse, they’ll find a way to tell you too how to reach that glorious vision that brought you to them in the first place.
- They’ll tell you with their behavior at the beginning. Then when you’re paying attention to that,
- they’ll tell you with how YOU’RE feeling, because your feelings are your inner guidance system and your horse’s everyday ability to communicate with you – a talent that every single person in the world has, without exception. Hang around here long enough and you’ll experience the truth of that for yourself.
- And then they’ll let you know that you got it right, with very practical results that feel good too.
So… insert your name here… pause for a moment and remember – what drew you to these magnificent creatures?
The way to feel that glorious horse feeling is to to START there and whenever you feel less than that feeling, to find your way back there as quickly as possible.
The fastest way to find that feeling again? Browse around the sidebar for the free stuff and the training programs for the very simple way that we do that. Everything we do here is based on learning practical ways to achieve what you want and to feel amazing while you’re doing it. If you’re on a mobile, the sidebar is underneath this article. I’ll look forward to meeting you. <3
Today’s picture of Owen and Gypsy is by the very talented, dearly departed Tracey Thompson. If you have lovely pictures or photos you’d like to share with us, I’m always looking for more of them and I link to you in the credits. <3

I find interesting how I seem to dip in and out of your world as life takes me !!
I am now well enough again to walk out and see the horses, not supposed to do anything yet, which is super frustrating, altho I probably cant anyway! – but I dont need to, I just love standing with them, Sierra is so gentle and careful with me while my breastbone heals. Such a healing time each morning when I let them out

Thanks Jenny – this is SO true – life got so much easier when I stopped hoping my mare would turn into the horses described in the training books and started listening to her.

And it’s been a pleasure to watch you doing that from afar. <3

Thank you Jenny, I will be forever grateful to you for teaching me how to Quieten my mind. The changes that has made to the relationship with my horses has been huge. Your blog today really strikes a chord. It was a little while ago that I started to question how my horses felt being around me!! Did my dream of riding beautifully come at the cost of my horses being unhappy? You showed me how to think differently, about horse training, and I also found a lovely Australian clinician who has helped me do things differently They feel better and I feel better.

One of the lovely things about this work is the foundation of Feel that it puts underneath everything else you do hey. <3
