We’ve had a number of badly damaged sway backs with dramatic kissing spine come back to normal in clinics, but this is the first one captured on video and it was achieved in an on-line clinic – me in Australia and Mel in England.
Healing and good horsemanship go hand in hand with Feel for our horse
This video shows a real life example of what I keep saying – that emotional stress causes muscular tension that pulls bones and joints out of place. The horse starts carrying themselves in a defensive, jarring kind of posture that causes all kinds of muscular skeletal and health problems.
And when we REVERSE that process – i.e. fix the emotional stresses – we create the opportunity to heal the physical problems that they caused.
It is PROFOUND…
Watch Mel’s video that she produced during and after one of my online clinics and then we’ll talk about the rich, multi layered healing that took place – and of Mel’s keys to success in transforming a bucking, rearing, biting, emotionally and physically damaged horse.
(Please note that I talk on the video about the FREE LESSONS The 9 Keys to Happiness with Your Horse. I updated that training 10 years later, with the videos we call The Key to the Kingdom of Horses. You’ll find a link to register for them on the sidebar, which if you’re on a mobile is underneath this page.)
See… Mel gave Pye a lovely home when she rescued him, but he was still in pain. Leaving him in the field to rest forever wouldn’t have changed those old buried stresses and tensions and wouldn’t have changed the pain.
Body therapies can also be good at helping a horse with kissing spine – that’s where I started this journey – but if the underlying cause, the emotional stresses with humans aren’t resolved, then the horse’s back isn’t lifting up, then the problem that caused the kissing spine in the first place is still there.
So what caused that dramatic change?
I like to use simple language. When you help a horse to release emotional stress then the muscles release their physical tension, blood starts to flow again where it was meant to, the way the horse carries their body – their movement, their posture – starts to change too. They lift up in the front end, get more powerful behind, their back lifts up more and more (the reverse of the saggy back of kissing spine) and they start moving in the beautiful flowing springing way they were designed to move – that enables all sorts of healing to happen that without it, is difficult if not impossible.
What were her keys to success?
+ Mel discovered her own abilities to Feel for her horse and used it to bring Pye to a new level of confidence with her. “Feel” is the single thing that makes every great horseman and woman great and we’re well known for teaching here.) She came to understand her unique Feel for others as a beautiful gift, instead of the burden that had previously been overwhelming her.
+ The emotional stresses that came from being so misunderstood, had actually caused Pye’s kissing spine. Some horses’ physical problems have their roots in one or more traumas – and as we release that trauma, the stress releases, the blood starts to flow into atrophied muscles, the muscles start pulling the bones back into place. The horse starts to carry themselves in a different posture. And that posture enables healing to happen that simply couldn’t happen before.
In Pye’s case, there had been a cascade of traumatic experiences and misunderstandings about why he was behaving so “badly”. These started to release as he gained confidence in being understood. There’s a process that we have in our Fast Track program that we call Release, Re-Learn and Re-program, that re-wires the neural pathways in the brain that speeds up that process.
+ For Mel and Pye, taking away all the force that he had experienced previously allowed him to find a trust in Mel that cut through his chronic stress and tension that had been a significant cause of that terrible back damage. “BE the change that you want your horse to be” was a big deal for Mel in recognizing how to get him to do things without force. So how does that work?
Mel wanted a happy relaxed horse, so she had to find a place where she herself was absolutely and authentically relaxed and happy – she WAS the change that she wanted Pye to be. And this relaxation can’t be faked, you can’t pretend and have this work – it has to be AUTHENTIC – and the process of finding that relaxation and happiness was phenomenally healing for Mel as well.
Do you want this kind of healing for your horse too?
As you’ve been looking around the website, have you noticed that all these gorgeous things happening with horse health and behavior aren’t just about your horse? Have you noticed it’s about YOUR journey to a wonderful life as well? Ahhh what a gift horses are!
Here’s a recent photo of Pye and Mel just uploaded to Facebook- that rearing, bucking, dangerously biting and attacking terror is a thing of the past. Well done Mel and Pye!

Wonderful to see such healing and development of a trusting relationship. Thank you for sharing with us Mel, Pye and Jenny. It is a reawakening to the possibilities. I think it is time for me to revisit the 6/9 keys of Happiness again.
jennya says
Thanks Clara – I am loving the new expanded version into The Nine Keys!
Mel says
A big thank you to Jenny, for first her 6 keys free information option. I do suggest everyone sign up for it. The Fast Track training and of course the wonderful sessions we had as I came to understand more about the energies I was using already but didn’t realize how they could be used to the full.
Love you Jenny, you are one amazing lady. Said with all my heart!!

Bless you back at you! 🙂

Brilliant Jenny! Of course emotions are linked to physical problems! Homeopaths have always known that! Vets and doctors are still in the dark ages as far as the cause of illness is concerned and have zero idea of the energetic process involved in healing.
jennya says
That kind of healing happens routinely but normally I don’t get the chance to see such vivid before and after pictures. To see such a DRAMATIC healing, documented in video was exciting hey?
Joanna says
i love this – it is so moving for me to see a horse so proud and happy, galloping around in his full power, it makes me tearful, and thanks to a human who took the time to listen. really gorgeous, thanks for sharing
jennya says
She did a brilliant job, didn’t she?
Anna-Karin says
Thank you for sharing Mel. It is so wonderful to watch!
And I know how it feels! Such a deep joy and love!
I think there is a lot in the words of Tom Dorrance and noe it is the second time in to days I read those words.
jennya says
He was very deep wasn’t he? 🙂
Anna-Karin says

I loved watching this!
(And now that there are 9 keys to happiness, I’ve just signed up AGAIN so I can get a refresher of the 6 keys–with 3 more–that I love so much!)
jennya says
Yeah we were going to have a big fanfare about them – but time has been slipping away…
Anna-Karin says
Devony, nice to see your name!
Corey says
DEVONY! ! ! ! ! How WONDERFUL to see you here!!! Me thinks a Thru The Grace Of The Horse reunion might be in order……..
jennya says
What a nice idea!
Kathy says
Mel, thank you for sharing this…so beautiful 🙂
jennya says
Very lovely of Mel to share those words to use in the editing about healing her own pain. A bit special of both of them hey?
Corey says
There needs to be a WARNING preface to that video at the start to move away from your keyboard before you start crying……….
Congratulations Mel & Jenny!!! Oh yeah……and Pye………
jennya says
Well dripping into your keyboard isn’t a good deal! 🙂 I thought it was incredibly moving, even when I’ve watched it so many times editing it. I never get tired of the miracles – freaking amazing… 🙂
jennya says
Oh yeah and don’t forget everyone else on the clinic. We work in an amplified field in a clinic like that, with everyone contributing beautiful energy and support to everyone else – they were magnificent!
Sue says
Inspirational Mel thankyou for sharing . Tears of happiness for you both.
Did the horse heal the human or the human heal the horse?
Wasn’t it Tom Dorrance who said …..
“First you go with the horse, then the horse goes with you, then you go together.”
jennya says
Yeah I cried too…
