Just a quick note to let you know that I have discovered (well Mel actually did the discovering!) a foot trimming rasp specifically designed for hard summer feet. And hard summer feet used to be sooo… hard to do.
It’s called a Red Tang, it’s from Heller Rasps and we just bought it from the local feed store.
What makes them sooo… much easier to use on hard summer feet are that the teeth are closer together and smaller, so you aren’t trying to bite so much off with each stroke of the rasp.
And wow does it make a difference!
I also lashed out and invested in a good set of nippers a while back and wow that made trimming a herd of horses easier too! Mel and I do 9 horses between us and mostly they are trimmed every 4 weeks or less for some. (Well that’s what we aim for.)
So now my good tools for trimming that make SUCH a difference on trimming days are a really good hoof stand so I don’t have to hold up the horses feet, ( we even have a special sized hoof stand for the minis now), a set of very sharp right and left handed knives that I am gradually getting better at using with left hand co-ordination and a very good loop knife.
We got the hoof stands and knives and nippers from Andrew Bowe at The Barefoot Blacksmith. I liked his service when I had a problem with a set of nippers that I didn’t like and he offered to replace it with another product even though it was not his fault. Good business Andrew!
FYI, it was the $85.00 12inch nipper that I didn’t like – his 14 inch Racetrack nippers are seriously good, specially with the spring gadget I bought that makes them easy to use one handed.
OM Goodness you have no idea what a HUGE difference these good tools make!
