And mannn if you’ve ever had bad fish oil, you’ll know it really sucks!
There are very few things we believe that are universally true to everyone, everywhere. If we can find even a single exception, then it’s not a universal law. I’m not going to call them “untrue beliefs” any more, because all beliefs are true to the person who holds them. And it’s not a matter of perception either as we’ll unfold in the following pages – beliefs become our very real lived experience. Unlike bad fish oil, all our beliefs are perfect – until they’re not working for us any more. That’s why we call them limiting beliefs, they subconsciously stop us from creating something new, achieving something wonderful or changing what we care about.
The trouble with using the word “untrue” when we’re talking about beliefs, is that there is no true or untrue when it comes to beliefs. ALL our beliefs are a wonderful part of our human experience when they serve us. When they’re not serving us, or not serving us any longer, I’d like to gather those beliefs together, feel the feeling of a big hug, thank them for their experience and let them go.
Beliefs become a problem when they get in the way of something we’re creating or changing something we care about. A belief that is getting in our way, is a common cause of that round and round in circles struggling feeling – which is why we’re using so many ways to open up to and find our own truth through this book. Most of our beliefs are imprinted (for want of a better word) on us from the outside.
Maybe it’s something that the people around us believe, or even wider society has accepted as being unchangeable – like “that illness or condition is incurable” or “you are your genetics” or “one person can’t make enough of a difference”.
Then there’s the more personal limitations imposed on us by others. Something someone said or did, or something that happened when we were vulnerable led us to believe something that isn’t a universal truth and is absolutely changeable. Maybe it’s that we aren’t worthy enough, aren’t good enough, or just plain aren’t enough – to create what we want in our lives, or to be what we want to be, do what we want to do or change what’s happening around us.
And that is just plain crap – just like that’s not a sheep in the photo, that’s just… not… true… We are faaar more powerful than we ever believed possible.
Photo: I decided not to put words on this one. The photo was extracted from one of Marie Richards much more beautiful compositions – I took out the human faces. I chose this picture to remind us that things often aren’t what they seem.
