Sandra reminded me this morning of a time when she woke up with an agonizing “crick” in her neck where she couldn’t turn her head and she says we solved it together in less than ten minutes. That kind of thing has happened so often I don’t remember her particular case from more than 8 years ago.
So why did she get rid of it so fast when she was in north Queensland and I was thousands of kms away near Melbourne and she’d already tried a local muscular skeletal therapist unsuccessfully? And why are there times that physio and muscle therapy and chiropractic just seem to go on and on forever without a lasting solution?
Not solving the problem or only partially solving the problem, is what happens when it’s an emotional not a physical cause. In that instance the healing can happen almost instantly when we understand and release the emotional cause. The pain and problem just disappears.
How do emotions cause a physical problem?
I won’t bore you with the technical and scientific explanation. When we don’t know what to do or how to deal with our feelings, they go through a process in the brain which eventually ends up with us burying them in our body. It’s an ingenious mechanism that stops us from going mad with the overload of feelings. Each layer of buried feelings builds into more and more stress. Each new stress causes another layer of physical tension, until eventually that physical tension is causing problems in all sorts of places in our bodies.
A common physical expression of stress is that tension across the top of our shoulders that caused Sandra’s cricked neck. I bet you’ve experienced it yourself – it starts with that tightness across the top of your shoulders at the base of the neck. It’s often a cause of headaches and you may not have noticed that it causes eye strain too and it sure as heck is behind that dreaded “crick in the neck” thing. (Hot tip, it’s almost always behind that frozen shoulder thing too.)
Sciatica is the same. When sciatica has an emotional root cause, you can work on the physical over and over again and not get a result that will last.
Neck pain isn’t the only thing that’s often caused by a build up of emotional stress and the tensions from that. I remember very early in my career, I had a guy come in to where I was working away from home for the day with a bunch of horses and people lined up for me to work with.
It took this bloke minutes to get out of the car and he walked down the driveway shuffling and bent over almost double. He’d been like that for 6 months and I’m pretty sure this was the same guy who was so desperate for pain relief that he was scheduled for surgery on the nerve.
His wife had heard of me through the horse world and dragged him there almost kicking and screaming. It makes me laugh now. His greeting to me was “I hope you’re OK with me thinking this” he moved an arm around where people and horses were waiting to be worked on “is a crock of shit. I don’t believe in this stuff.”
My reply was a smile and “You don’t have to believe in it for it to work. It’s real so it works anyway.”
About an hour later he walked out the front gate jokingly doing the Hawaiian hula with his hips. Six months of agony, looking down the barrel of a life time of problems – gone in about an hour. That was errr 25 years ago and we’re even better and faster now. Like Sandra’s ten minutes, fast recovery is common when you get at the root cause straight away.
Understanding the emotional origins of physical pain can be a game-changer in finding all kinds of effective, long-lasting relief to so many things. This article isn’t the place for a long conversation about the why’s and wherefores of all the physical problems that are relieved by getting at their mental and emotional root causes. A crick in the neck, a frozen shoulder and sciatica are only three examples of many, many chronic physical conditions or illnesses that are either caused by emotional stress and tension or made worse by emotional stress and tension.
Do you want some of this for yourself or for your horse?

The photo: That’s the closest thing I could find to a “crick” in the neck. 🙂 This is one of the glorious young stallions from the Snowy Mountains from my digital Horse Wisdom Messages, with the gracious permission of Michelle J Photography. His name escapes me at the moment but I’m sure someone will tell me! You can follow her journey with the wild horses on Facebook.

absolutely so true Jenny….all those unfelt issues put to ‘the back’ of out mind generally end up in the intrinsic muscles of the spine as a defence mechanism/posture. I’m sure this is what the mare is experiencing. She’s in total defence.
You’ve nailed it! She’s very lucky you’re on the Fast Track program. It’s brilliant for releasing all those old emotional stresses and finding a beautiful way of moving again. That’s the secret behind the profound healing that people get for their horses on that program.
